NSSI Mentor Teacher
Our Mission: The National Summer School Initiative (NSSI) helps schools accelerate student learning and strengthen teacher practice through high-quality summer programming for grades K-12. Originally born out of a need to address pandemic-related learning loss, our model continues to endure, ensuring engaging instruction and teacher growth by providing turnkey curriculum and exceptional professional development.
Who are Mentor Teachers? Mentor Teachers are experienced educators and passionate coaches who lead virtual professional development (PD) sessions that empower math and ELA teachers to deliver rigorous, engaging, and joyful summer learning. As the backbone of NSSI’s summer programming, you’ll equip teachers with high-impact instructional practices, ensuring they feel confident and prepared. This role offers the opportunity to drive teacher success, shape student learning, and grow as a leader, facilitator, and coach.
Your responsibilities as a Mentor Teacher include:
Fully participate in Onboarding
Attend team meetings and complete asynchronous training (April–May) to deeply internalize session plans, slide decks, and supplemental materials, ensuring confident and effective delivery.
Refine Delivery Skills
Participate in rehearsals to perfect session facilitation and seamlessly navigate technology.
Lead Teacher Institute
Facilitate a 2–3 day training to introduce teachers to the curriculum and instructional practices they’ll use throughout summer school.
Deliver Ongoing Professional Development
Following institute, lead weekly PD sessions throughout the following five weeks of summer programming to help teachers refine instructional techniques and apply new concepts to upcoming lessons.
Build a Collaborative Community
Foster strong relationships among teachers, creating an engaging and supportive learning environment.
Mentor Teacher Qualifications:
Proven Impact in Math or ELA Instruction
At least 5+ years of measurable success in improving student achievement.
Skilled PD Facilitator
Experience leading high-quality PD for up to 100 teachers (virtual experience preferred).
Strong Communicator
Ability to effectively engage teachers through clear, concise communication.
Technology Proficiency
Comfortable using virtual training tools (i.e. Zoom) to support virtual learning.
Inspirational Leader
Motivates, coaches, and aligns diverse educators toward instructional excellence.
Relationship-Builder
Quickly establishes trust and fosters collaboration across teams and school communities.
Adaptable & Solution-Oriented:
Thrives in fast-paced learning environments, adjusting to teachers’ needs.
Summer Schedule*
ONBOARDING PHASE - April - May 2025 - 20-30hrs (mostly asynchronous) - Paid: $900
TEACHER INSTITUTE - Institute 1: May 25-27, 2025 - Institute 2: June 10-12, 2025 - Institute 3: June 24-26, 2025 - 3-4 hours per day - Paid: $200 per hour NYC INSTITUTE - June 30-July 1, 2025 - 3-4 hours per day - Paid: $200 per hour
ONGOING PD SESSIONS - Institute 1: Tuesdays 1:30 + 4:30pm ET - Institute 2: Wednesdays 1:30 + 4:30pm ET - Institute 3: Thursdays 1:30 + 4:30pm ET - 1 hour per session - Paid: $200 per hour
*While all Mentor Teachers are required to join onboarding, you will indicate your Institute and Ongoing PD session availability during the interview process. From there, we would confirm where our need is relative to your availability. Please note that our needs are subject to change at any time.

If you’ve led virtual professional development, what were the biggest challenges, and what strategies did you use to overcome them? If you haven’t led virtual PD, what challenges do you anticipate, and how might you address them.
Highly encouraged: Include a video submission of yourself teaching or leading professional development to showcase your facilitation skills.
Step 2: Phone Interview - Qualified candidates will be invited to a 30-minute phone interview to discuss their experience, instructional expertise, and approach to coaching teachers.
Step 3: Performance Task - Candidates who advance will complete a facilitation task designed to assess their ability to:
- Lead rigorous, adult learning discussions - Provide actionable coaching and feedback
Step 4: Group Interview & Live Facilitation - Finalists will participate in a group interview where they will deliver a portion of an NSSI professional development session.
